SCOTS GUARDS

"The boys are all on brilliant form and are doing a fantastic job whilst enjoying considerable success. There are a lot of patrols alongside more regular activities such as securing the twice weekly bazaar (Tue and Fri) and the weekly shuras in the patrol base. All of the checkpoints are making quite a mark with the locals and some friendships have been struck up, it will just take a bit of time and Afghan government buy in (which has already started) for them to completely trust us. I think they have been let down too many times before. Improvements to the infrastructure and facilities are ongoing with the boys becoming dab hands at making furniture out of pretty much anything. A new more permanent Patrol base is being built opposite the current compound and we have expanded the plans to ensure there is room for the vast majority of the Company should we hand over some of our current positions. Gym equipment, PSPs etc are starting to arrive as Battalion Headquarters and the stores staff get deeper into what is available so all in all life is looking pretty good and allows the boys a bit of a break when they come in off the ground. It is definitely starting to warm up and the last month has been a useful and slightly gradual acclimatisation. Some of the boys are already starting to look like some of the locals and sporting some pretty impressive tans." - extracted from Regimental News, 5.23.2010
